10 Travel tips to help reduce back pain

Maybe you're trying to pack that last vacation in before school starts, or traveling over labor day weekend. here are a list of ways to keep your back pain from taking over your travel plans!

1. Use ice packs. We call ice the "wonderdrug". It can help reduce swelling and soreness that may occur from sitting in the same place or position for long periods of time.

2. Stay hydrated. Water is the most important resource your body needs. Drinking lots of water can greatly improve your circulation and keep you awake on those long road trips.

3. Move. Getting out of the car every hour or so can help to increase your circulation as well as keep your muscles from tightening up. Schedule regular pit stops to take a walk around your vehicle or even stand for a little while. If you are on an airplane take time to walk the isle.

4. Use pillows. Neck pillows can be very helpful to align your spine while you sit. Using a lumbar pillow or simply putting a blanket or sweatshirt behind your low back can prevent your muscles from tightening over a long journey.

5. pay attention to the weight of your luggage. Carrying bags that weigh over ten percent of your body weight puts a large amount of strain on your back. Consider using smaller bags when travelling in a car or check your large baggage if you are flying.

6. Dress comfortably. Wear comfortable shoes and dress in loose clothing. This will allow you to relax both mentally and physically during your travels. Shoes that feel uncomfortable on your feet can alter your gate causing back and joint pain.

7. Stretch. Stretches that strengthen your back both before and during your travels can do wonders for the body.Bring your yoga mat with you!

8. be conscious of your posture. If you are driving set your mirrors to where you can see through them if you are sitting properly. This way you are able to subconsciously check your posture. By doing this, your back will remain aligned and your core strong.

9. If you are driving, use cruise control. Cruise control is a great way for you to allow your legs to rest more naturally during your travels. Maintaining good posture and allowing your legs to rest can help with back pain.

10. If you are flying, choose an aisle seat. Sitting in a plane for long periods of time can put stress on your back. By taking the aisle seat you are giving yourself the opportunity to stretch your legs and sit in a more natural position where you won't feel so cramped.
